DRYPOINT RA refrigeration dryers can now be operated with a climate-friendly refrigerant

In the new blog post, product manager Pascal Böhm is our interview partner. Pascal gives us interesting insights into our DRYPOINT RA refrigeration dryers, which can now also be operated with the environmentally friendly refrigerant R513A. Learn about the positive effects of this development and the benefits for both climate protection and our customers.

  • Pascal, why is it good news that the DRYPOINT RA refrigeration dryers can now also be equipped with the refrigerant R513A?

The refrigerant R513A has a comparatively low global warming potential. Users therefore protect the climate with these models and comply with the European Union's F-Gases Regulation, which states that environmentally harmful refrigerants with a high global warming potential (GWP) must be phased out of the market.

  • What about the refrigerants used so far?

The refrigerants R407C and R134a are currently still permitted and will continue to be used in our refrigeration dryers. However, a progressive shortage of market supply may make it difficult or impossible to repair leaking equipment. Therefore, if possible, new equipment should be immediately equipped with the more climate-friendly refrigerant R513A as a more sensible and future-oriented alternative.

  • Do customers have any other advantages as a result?

In Germany, for example, our refrigeration dryers with R513A are currently eligible for subsidies from the German Federal Office of Economics and Export Control (BAFA). Their purchase is subsidized by up to 40 percent as part of the National Climate Protection Initiative (Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Directive). This is for sure an additional strong argument for our German customers.

  • Did the use of the new refrigerant require technical adjustments to the refrigeration dryer components?

The use of R513A required adjustments to the refrigerant circuit of our units, the scope of which depends on the respective configuration. Affected are, for example, the refrigerant compressor, the condensation assembly, the dimensioning of the lines or the expansion element.

  • Does the climate friendliness of the new refrigerant come at the expense of the energy efficiency of refrigeration dryers?

A clear "yes and no". The nominal power consumption is 6% higher, but depending on the size and components used, the energy balance can even be positive. This is because the components used, such as the compressor, work more effectively with the larger capacity of the R513A. On the other hand, it is also possible that more powerful compressors or condensing assemblies are required, which in turn increases the energy consumption.

  • Can you give us an outlook for the coming years? What should companies look out for in the future when they purchase refrigeration dryers?

There is no way around the new generation of refrigeration dryers with more climate-friendly refrigerants such as R513A. We are therefore pleased that our DRYPOINT RA eco series will also be available with the new refrigerant from the fall of 2023.

Thank you very much, Pascal, for taking the time to share your experiences around this important topic with us.
